Hezbollah and the UN

A lot of news agencies are carrying stories suggesting that the UN could play a peacekeeping role in Lebanon after the current fighting is over.

It is important to remember what happened when UNIFIL (UN Interim Force in Lebanon) was supposed to maintain peace along the Israel-Lebanon border in 2000. Three Israeli soldiers were kidnapped during a border patrol near the Shebaa Farms, although the incident was clearly visible from the UNIFIL observation post four hundred yards away. (Dore Gold, Tower of Babble p203) UNIFIL's knowledge of what was going on and inability to act was made clear a few days later when the Daily Star in Beirut carried an article containing "interviews with UNIFIL troops who witnessed the snatch". (Nicholas Blanford, the Daily Star)

The failure of UNIFIL to do anything just six years ago shows that another kidnapping could be the consequence of the same mistake being made again.
